Cedric and Zelda went shopping at Price Buster. Cedric bought 2 jumbo rolls of aluminum foil and 3 packages of AA batteries for a total cosst of $21. Zelda bought 5 identical jumbo rolls of aluminum foil and 2 identical packages of AA batteries for a total cost of $25. Find the cost of 1 package of AA batteries. two equations = two unknowns
x = aluminum foil
y= Batteries
2x+3y = 21
5x+2y = 25
Solve first equation for x
2x = 21 – 3y
x = 10.5 – (3y/2) (three y over 2)
place into second equation substituting x
5(10.5 – (3y/2)) +2y = 25
52.5 – (15y/2) +2y = 25 subtract 52.5 from both sides
-(15y/2) + 2y = -27.5 subtract 2y
-(15y/2) = -27.5 – 2y divide all by -1
15y/2 = 27.5 +2y multiply by 2
15y = 55 +4y subtract 4y
11y = 55
y = 5
batteries cost 5 dollars

plug into second equation and solve for x
5x + 2(5) = 25
5x +10 = 25
5x = 15
x=3
plug into first equation
2(3) + 3(5) = 21
6+15 = 21
21 = 21
